Little is known about one of the most expensive yet most sought after coffee known to man. It is found only in some countries of South East Asia. It has an exquisite taste and aroma making it incomparable to other coffees. The bean commonly called “Cafe Alamid” is produced in Indonesia, Vietnam , East Timor and the Philippines but is widely known and distributed in all parts of the world.
What’s even more surprising is it’s origin. Unlike most coffee that come from plants that grow from the ground. This coffee takes it’s name from a small animal called Alamid in the Philippines’ also known as the Asian Palm Civet or the Philippine Civet Cat (although it is not a member of the feline family).
History says it all started when a group of coffee farmers examined the droppings of these small animals after a night long feast of coffee cherries. Unmindful of any possible health issues, these native farmers began cleaning, roasting and brewing these droppings which eventually became famous and gave way to an entirely new and unorthodox coffee making.
A study was conducted and scientists came up with a standard procedure in cleaning and roasting these exotic beans to remove any harmful bacteria while retaining it’s distinctive taste and aroma. There were also studies that answered why these droppings produce this great tasting coffee. As the beans pass the natural way of digestion inside the Alamid (where it actually retains it’s natural form and texture) – their digestive enzymes are infused into the beans. What makes it better is the fact that they will only eat the sweetest and ripest coffee cherries.
Nowadays, Cafe Alamid is starting to really make a name for itself as a top-grade coffee that sells up to as much as a thousand dollars per pound. Some coffee shops serve them at $33 per cup. The market has various kinds of coffee but Cafe Alamid is undoubtedly becoming more and more popular and surely, the billions of coffee drinkers around the world would have a true experience with a cup of this world class coffee.
