A good portion of the world’s population probably can’t function well prior to consumption of their daily caffeine fix. A cup of joe can work wonders for the system, at the very least, giving your slumbering senses a jolt. Take coffee and mix it up with fashion and socialization and you get the coffee shop phenomenon. You can blame Starbucks if you want. Suddenly, people have to have signature coffee. People don’t just take it black, au lait, or with two lumps of sugar anymore. They rattle off a long list of qualifiers when they order. Try “double ristretto venti nonfat organic chocolate brownie frappuccino extra hot with foam and whipped cream upside down double blended,” for instance.
Then there’s the coffee shop experience. It varies, after all. In Toronto, they have all kinds. Mostly, people would love to have something like a Central Perk in their neighborhood, and many entrepreneurs have attempted to give them that. For variety, there’s the traditional mom and pop coffee shop with mismatched tables and chairs and probably live bands at night too. Don’t forget the plain, non-pretentious coffee shop either. There’s nothing trendy about it, but it probably has an early bird special. Above all, you’ll find plenty of quirky places these days. Quirk is always cool, don’t you know. All these places should be great for conversation with friends, sitting alone perusing the news or Toronto real estate listings, and people watching. Whatever kind of coffee shop it may be, it’s really about the coffee. People go to them for the brew, so the offering should be good.
