Long before the Great Wall of China stood tall and rammed earth homes became a trend, coffee was taking a journey from Ethiopia to America and across the globe. Its popularity made it a necessity but some events almost led to its downfall. As it made its way to Europe, many people wanted to ban coffee and saw it as the “devil’s drink” and early American expeditions only began in the 17th century where trades weren’t as open as they are now.
After encountering roadblocks along the way, coffee has risen against all adversities and has shown unimaginable potential. During the turn of the 21st century, it has given birth to a giant world-wide industry covering the globe, ranking second to petroleum in relation to global dollar trades and employing more than 20 million people.
Recent studies have shown a huge increase global coffee demands and prices have began to go up by more than 80 percent in 2011 and continues to rise even as we speak. Countries like China, who are known for drinking tea, have also exhibited increasing demands for coffee. The appearance of plantations and shops has also increased exponentially over the last decades. Though prices have increased, future analysis confirms no shortages in global supplies.
In its long journey through time, this little bean has grown from a myth to a world-wide commodity. Though encountering challenges along the way, its future seems brighter than ever.
